SKIN DEEP EDUCATION

The Journey

SKIN DEEP EDUCATION (SDE) was started by Joshua Obichere (BSc, PGCE, MEd, MA) who saw a gap in educating people about race and diversity through Art & Design.

Joshua is recent graduate with a Distinction in MA Fine Art at Central Saint Martins, UAL. He also has a masters in Education from The University of Cambridge, where he received a Distinction and The Best Dissertation Award (2022) out of 90 people on his programme. Being awarded with The Best Dissertation Award 2022 gave Joshua the confidence about setting up Skin Deep Education.

During Joshua's studies at Cambridge, as part of his dissertation research, he created resources for his A-level Art & Photography students which would become the building block for a successful outcome. These resources are shared during the workshops as well. He curated and ran his first solo exhibition at Cambridge Artworks titled Skin Deep, exploring blackness through portraiture which was also exhibited again at The Cambridge Union. Joshua is also the founder of Cambridge Black Creatives and his work during Cambridge has been innovative, inclusive and engaging; the work is for anyone and everyone.

Since Joshua's teaching career began on the PGCE at Cambridge in 2020, he has built experience and confidence in online teaching during the pandemic as well as fostering and having a great rapport as a teacher, artist and educator. Joshua goes above and beyond and as a result, has not failed to inspire many people with his enthusiastic approach.
